The Fate of the Boardman River Dams

This is a link to the Boardman River Dam Project. This site holds information on the dams located on Boardman River in Grand Traverse County and Kalkaska County.

Boardman River Dams Project Mission:

"To engage all interests in assessing and recommending the fate of the dams ...based upon a thorough analysis of options, including long and short-term economic, social, environmental, aesthetic, transportation and ecological impacts upon the community, individuals and riparian owners."

The Boardman River Dams Project engages all interests to recommend the fate of four dams (e.g. retain, remove, modify, etc.) on the Boardman River in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties. The Project is entering its final year, and the Committee will be requiring input from as many community members as possible for its recommendation to be completed by December 2008.  This is an extremely important issue that will have great effects throughout the entire area.  The Boardman River Dams Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center; everyone is welcome to attend.

Grand Traverse County releases Geographic Information System on Internet

Traverse City, Mich. - A new Internet program from Grand Traverse County provides the community access to all kinds of geographic data and information about the County.  The Geographic Information System or GIS is a technology whereby people can search, view and map data about their community via the Internet.  The GIS can be accessed at the County website:  http://www.grandtraverse.org/ (click on "GTC Interactive Mapping").  The GIS is available to anyone with Internet access at no charge and with no passwords required.

The GIS, developed by Ernie Cacciaglia, GIS Coordinator for Grand Traverse County, not only provides the information, but also has functions that allow any user to analyze and compare data.  GIS information includes parcels, aerial photos, roads, lakes and rivers, latitude and longitude coordinates, school districts, voting precincts, County Commissioner districts, addresses and more.

Ernie Cacciaglia sees the GIS as only a beginning, "It is truly a work in progress.  The GIS can become a platform for the County and local government to share data in a way that is accessible and visible to everyone."

A grant from the Rotary Charities of Traverse City allowed the County to have the right software and hardware in place so the GIS could be securely placed on the Internet.  All the information and data is public information that can be viewed but cannot be altered.  Users can access the GIS 24 hours a day.

"With change in our community, it is essential that we all understand where places are located and how they are related to each other," says John Sych, Grand Traverse County Planning Director, "Reliable, accurate and readily accessible geographic information is a key component to a community making decisions and determining its future.  This program provides that information."

The County will provide a public training session on the new GIS on Monday, June 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Traverse Area District Library.  The workshop is free.  However, seating is limited so you need to register by calling the County Planning Department at 922-4676.  The County is also planning to provide additional training opportunities.
