The Planning and Zoning Departments work closely with township property owners on issues regarding township land use. They have developed a comprehensive master plan and incorporated it into township ordinance. Their primary duty is to review and recommend to the town board the direction that the public wants to take. There are two staff members to implement these plans and seven planning commission members that make policy for the township. They process applications, agendas, prepare meeting minutes and give notice of public hearings. They review and approve proposals for land divisions and issue permits.
Land Use Permits from the Township are required for all types of construction activity, such as new homes, additions, garages and all decks. Sheds, including plastic and canvas sheds & car ports, that are 10' x 10' or larger also require a Land Use Permit. It is a good idea to check with the Zoning Office prior to construction to see what permits are needed. Land Use Permits, that are complete and filed, are usually issued within five working days, during regular business hours. Appointments for application review are available.
If you have questions regarding the use of your property, the Planning and Zoning staff are an excellent resource.
